Dear Friends of BASIC Books & Cafe...

It is 5 o'clock in the morning as I write this from my bed listening to the thunder and lightning
and rain falling just outside my open window. The birds are just beginning to sing despite the weather.
I must come up with words to express my feelings to you. I suppose it isn't true that I "must" do this...
it is more accurate to say that I "desire" to do this. I'm curious as to how it's all going to come out,
because you see, as I write to you, I learn more about what's going on in me.

Ten years ago, my sweet husband, Curtis, felt a calling from God to start BASIC. It was a pretty
powerful calling; believe, because it involved action on our part with no promise about how things would
turn out, except that we would have the pleasure of following Him with more than our lips. We were just
into our 30s and I remember being filled with inexpressible joy because of my husband's child-like purity
of heart and willingness to be like the guys in the Bible who "really" trusted God. It was a very exciting
time to say the least!!

Through the years we have experienced great joys, and more challenges than you can probably
even fathom, unless you too have elected not to live a "safe" life. It has been rich and full and demanding
and rewarding. God has been faithful every step of the way and has lovingly humbled us as He helps us
continually rely on Him and keep our priorities in order.

I'm not sure how to say what I have to say next without causing misunderstanding. But the time
has come that we need to close the store is a decision made for us as clearly as the decision was to
start BASIC. We have no more ability to keep it open than we had ability to ignore the call to open it in
the first place. We continue desperately, joyfully, trustingly, hopefully, tearfully, happily to keep our eyes
fixed on Jesus as we do this. Life is just as exciting as ever!

I hope the time that BASIC has existed at 1620 S. Koeller Street has been a blessing to you personally.
I hope the love of Jesus has touched you here. I hope our love, and the love of each person who has
served in some capacity here has touched you as well. We really have strived, quite literally, however
imperfectly, to live up to the name of the store: Brothers And Sisters In Christ.

Each one of you is special to us, perhaps more than you know. We pray for His greatest blessings on
each one of you. Curtis personally sends his love from Colorado. He will be here in Oshkosh for a week
or so in July as we finish closing the store and would love to speak with you and shake your hand personally.

In Him,
Barbara Riskey... for Curtis too
